Tracks & Fellowships

Your residency, your way. Choose a specialized track to focus your training, explore fellowship pathways after graduation, or extend to a fourth year to pursue a graduate degree.

Specialized Tracks

Residents may select a track that aligns with their career interest. Tracks provide dedicated elective time, mentorship, and focused learning experiences across PGY-2 and PGY-3. Can't find the right fit? Design your own.

Academic Medicine

For residents interested in a career in medical education, faculty development, and academic leadership. Includes teaching workshops, curriculum design, and mentored scholarly activity.

Community Medicine

Focuses on underserved care, population health, and social determinants of health. Residents work with community clinics, free clinics, and public health organizations across Tampa Bay.

Lifestyle Medicine

Evidence-based training in nutrition, exercise, stress management, sleep, and behavior change as therapeutic tools. Prepares residents for board certification in Lifestyle Medicine.

Sports Medicine

Train alongside USF Health Sports Medicine, which provides care for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, USF Athletics, USA Hockey, and more. Ideal preparation for a Sports Medicine fellowship.

Clinical Informatics

Explore the intersection of medicine and technology — EHR optimization, clinical decision support, data analytics, and health IT leadership. Led by Dr. Hanna, a board-certified Clinical Informaticist.

Global Health

For residents passionate about health equity on a global scale. Includes international elective opportunities, tropical medicine, and global health policy.

MPH Track

Pursue a Master of Public Health through USF College of Public Health during residency with an optional fourth-year extension to complete coursework and capstone.

MBA Track

Pursue a Master of Business Administration through the USF Muma College of Business during residency with an optional fourth-year extension.

Design Your Own

Have a unique interest that doesn’t fit neatly into an existing track? Work with your advisor and the program director to design a custom track tailored to your career goals.

Optional Fourth Year

Residents can extend their training to a fourth year to pursue a graduate degree, deepen subspecialty expertise, or build a portfolio for competitive fellowships. The fourth year is fully customizable — you choose your own adventure.

MPH Completion

Complete your Master of Public Health through USF College of Public Health, including capstone and field experience.

MBA Completion

Complete your Master of Business Administration through USF Muma College of Business with evening and weekend coursework.

Custom Focus

Design a fourth year around research, teaching, global health, or subspecialty electives. Work with the program director to build a schedule that advances your career goals.

Fellowship Pathways After Residency

Family medicine graduates are eligible for a wide range of ACGME-accredited fellowships. Our curriculum is designed to prepare residents who are interested in subspecialty training after residency.

Sports Medicine

1 year

ACGME-accredited primary care sports medicine fellowship. Residents graduating from our program are well-positioned to apply, with direct exposure to USF Health Sports Medicine throughout training.

Sleep Medicine

1 year

Fellowship training in the diagnosis and management of sleep disorders, including sleep studies, CPAP management, and behavioral sleep medicine.

Hospice & Palliative Care

1 year

Fellowship in end-of-life care, symptom management, goals of care conversations, and interdisciplinary palliative care team leadership.

Clinical Informatics

2 years

ACGME-accredited fellowship in clinical informatics — EHR design, clinical decision support, data science, and health IT leadership. Joint program with Moffitt Cancer Center.
